Comcast layoffs are coming before the end of 2026. On October 22, Comcast said it will book a restructuring charge of more than $1 billion in the fourth quarter, and the cuts are aimed at its cable, broadband and wireless business, not NBCUniversal. The first state notice covers 159 jobs in Washington, with separations running from December 31 into March 2027.
Key takeaways: Comcast layoffs 2026
- Size: no company-wide number yet; a 4th-quarter restructuring charge of more than $1 billion.
- Who: mostly Connectivity & Platforms (Xfinity), across management layers, construction, network and sales roles.
- Why: the NBCUniversal and Sky separation by mid-2027, 144,000 broadband customers lost in Q3, and AI-driven customer service.
- History: the third Comcast cable restructuring in four years, after 2022 and 2025.
- Next: 2027 stacks Comcast’s split on top of synergy targets at Verizon, Charter and AT&T.

What do we know about the 2026 Comcast layoffs?
The Comcast layoffs were signaled on the company’s third-quarter earnings call on October 22, 2026. CFO Jason Armstrong said Comcast expects “a significant charge in the fourth quarter,” more than $1 billion, mostly tied to what it calls transformation.
A day earlier, Bloomberg reported that Comcast planned significant job cuts within weeks across its cable TV, broadband and wireless businesses. Co-CEO Mike Cavanagh called the effort the largest initiative in Comcast’s history and said it “goes well beyond cost savings.”
The first hard number came from Washington state. A WARN notice filed October 29 lists 159 permanent job losses at regional offices and remote positions in Bellingham, Bremerton, Everett, Olympia, Puyallup, Redmond, Seattle, Spokane and Vancouver.
| Comcast layoffs detail | What Comcast has disclosed |
|---|---|
| Restructuring charge | More than $1 billion, fourth quarter of 2026 |
| Business affected | Connectivity & Platforms: Xfinity broadband, video and wireless |
| Company headcount | About 179,000 at the end of 2025 |
| First state notice | Washington: 159 jobs, filed October 29, 2026 |
| Separation dates | December 31, 2026 through March 26, 2027 |
| Roles named | Construction, network technicians, engineers, finance, sales, supervisors and two vice presidents |
| Internal openings | More than 1,100 jobs posted company-wide |
In the first Comcast layoffs notice, construction roles, including specialists, managers and permitting coordinators, make up the largest group in the Washington notice. None of the affected employees are union members. Comcast says the work is not being outsourced and that it will pay severance to employees who stay through their last day.
“Comcast is fundamentally redesigning our organization to build a more agile company and better serve our customers,” senior vice president Tuck Rainwater said in a statement reported by MyNorthwest. More WARN notices typically follow in other states as separations near.
Why are the Comcast layoffs happening now?
Three pressures meet in the Comcast layoffs of 2026: a corporate split, a shrinking broadband base and automation in customer service.
The split. Comcast announced in June 2026 that it will separate NBCUniversal and Sky into a separate public company by mid-2027. The cable and connectivity business that remains is being rebuilt as a leaner company, and former CFO Mike Angelakis is set to lead it after the separation.
The customer losses. Comcast lost 144,000 residential broadband customers in the third quarter of 2026, up from 91,000 a year earlier. Analyst Craig Moffett called it the worst third quarter ever. Comcast blamed “irrational pricing” from fiber competitors and an unusually high number of customers rolling off promotions.
| Comcast Q3 2026 metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Broadband customers | −144,000 (28.34 million total) |
| Video customers | −274,000 (10.39 million total) |
| Domestic broadband revenue | $6.55 billion, down 4.7% |
| Mobile lines | +368,000 (10.55 million total) |
| Customer service contact rate | Down about 20% with AI agents |
The automation. Comcast says AI agents have cut customer service contact rates by about 20% and eliminated more than 30 million service interactions so far this year. Fewer calls mean fewer people needed to answer them, which is why call-center and support roles are exposed in the Comcast layoffs.
New Street Research estimates the program could cut about $3 billion in costs, with most of the cash cost landing in early 2027.
Comcast layoffs before 2026: 2022 and 2025
The 2026 Comcast layoffs are the third reshaping of its cable organization in four years. Each one removed a different layer.
- Late 2022: Comcast cut back-office and in-house roles in its cable field organization, while sparing field technicians. Then-CFO Mike Cavanagh flagged severance costs on the third-quarter call. Comcast booked $638 million in severance in the fourth quarter of 2022, $345 million of it in cable, much of it tied to a voluntary retirement program. Cable headcount fell from 79,000 to 73,000 that year.
- September 2025: A memo from Connectivity & Platforms CEO Dave Watson and COO Steve Croney phased out Comcast’s division structure. One management layer between headquarters and the regions was removed, regional teams began reporting to a new president of regional operations, and layoffs were set to begin that January.
- October 2026: The largest round yet, with a charge of more than $1 billion and cuts across management, construction, network and sales roles ahead of the NBCUniversal split.
Comcast’s company-wide headcount never fell the way AT&T’s and Verizon’s did, because NBCUniversal and the 2018 Sky acquisition kept adding employees. The cable unit is where the cuts concentrate.
| Year-end | Comcast employees (all segments) |
|---|---|
| 2016 | 159,000 |
| 2018 | 184,000 |
| 2019 | 190,000 |
| 2021 | 189,000 |
| 2022 | 186,000 |
| 2023 | 186,000 |
| 2024 | 182,000 |
| 2025 | 179,000 |

AT&T and Verizon: a decade of slow cuts
The Comcast layoffs arrive late to a pattern its phone-company rivals set years ago. AT&T and Verizon rarely announced one big layoff. They shrank through buyouts, attrition, retirements and repeated small rounds, year after year.
| Company | End of 2016 | End of 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T | 268,000 | 133,030 | −50.4% |
| Verizon | 160,900 | 89,900 | −44.1% |
| Comcast (all segments) | 159,000 | 179,000 | +12.6% |
AT&T’s workforce fell by half in ten years, partly through the sale of WarnerMedia but mostly through steady reductions in its wireline business. Verizon cut 71,000 jobs over the same stretch, then announced more than 13,000 layoffs in November 2025 under new CEO Dan Schulman, about 13% of its workforce.
The slow creep worked because the old copper and video businesses were declining anyway. Comcast’s cable business is now in the same position, which is why its approach is starting to look like theirs. Our telecom layoffs by company tracker has the full year-by-year filings.
Why 2027 could hit telecom jobs harder
Most of the big U.S. telecom deals closed in 2025 and 2026, and integration savings usually arrive one to three years after closing. That puts 2027 in the middle of nearly every synergy timeline at once.
| Deal or event | Status | What the company has promised |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon – Frontier | Closed January 20, 2026 | At least $500 million a year in cost synergies by year three |
| AT&T – Lumen consumer fiber | Closed February 2, 2026 | Quantum Fiber folded into AT&T Fiber |
| Charter – Cox | Closed August 20, 2026 | $500 million in annual cost savings within three years |
| Comcast restructuring | Charge in Q4 2026 | Cash cost mostly in early 2027 |
| Comcast NBCUniversal and Sky split | Planned by mid-2027 | A standalone connectivity company |
| ADT – Thrive Holdings | Expected Q1 2027 | ADT goes private |
“Synergies” in a merger announcement mostly mean overlapping jobs: two headquarters, two billing systems, two call-center networks and two sets of regional managers. Charter already cut about 1,200 corporate roles in October 2025, before the Cox deal closed.
Comcast’s own notice shows the timing. Washington separations run until March 26, 2027, so the 2026 Comcast layoffs will spill into the new year. Add Verizon and Charter working toward their savings targets, and 2027 could see more telecom job cuts than 2026.

What the Comcast layoffs mean for Xfinity customers
Nothing about your Xfinity plan changes because of the Comcast layoffs. Your price, contract and service continue as written, and Comcast says it is not outsourcing the work.
What will change is how you get help. Expect more support through AI chat and voice agents, and fewer regional offices. If you need an install or repair, book it early in the busy season.
The bigger opportunity is price. Comcast is losing customers to fiber and 5G home internet, which gives you leverage. If your promotional rate is ending, call and ask for a retention offer, or compare the fiber and wireless options at your address first.

Comcast layoffs FAQ
Is Comcast laying off employees in 2026?
Yes. Comcast told investors on October 22, 2026 that it will take a restructuring charge of more than $1 billion in the fourth quarter, and Bloomberg reported significant job cuts across its cable TV, broadband and wireless businesses. A Washington state WARN notice filed October 29 covers 159 employees, with separations from December 31, 2026 through March 26, 2027.
How many people is Comcast laying off?
Comcast has not disclosed a total. State WARN notices give the clearest counts so far, starting with 159 jobs in Washington. For scale, Comcast ended 2025 with about 179,000 employees, and the cuts are expected to fall mostly on Connectivity & Platforms, the Xfinity side of the company.
Why is Comcast cutting jobs?
Comcast is redesigning the company ahead of separating NBCUniversal and Sky by mid-2027. The cable business lost 144,000 broadband customers in the third quarter of 2026 as fiber and 5G home internet competition intensified, and AI tools have cut customer service contact rates by about 20%.
Has Comcast had layoffs before?
Yes. In late 2022 Comcast cut back-office roles in its cable field organization and booked $638 million in severance, $345 million of it in cable, as cable headcount fell from 79,000 to 73,000. In September 2025 it removed a layer of regional management between headquarters and local offices, with layoffs starting the following January.
Will the Comcast layoffs affect Xfinity service or prices?
The layoffs do not change your Xfinity plan, price or contract. Expect more support through AI chat and voice agents. If your promotional rate is ending, compare Xfinity with the fiber and 5G providers at your address before you renew.
