Brightspeed Internet: $29.99 Fiber Where the Build Has Landed, $50 DSL Where It Hasn’t

Brightspeed internet in September 2026 is really two companies under one name: a fast-growing symmetrical fiber network priced from $29.99 a month for 200 Mbps and $49.99 for 1 Gig, and the old CenturyLink copper DSL it inherited, still sold at up to 20–40 Mbps for around $50–$55. Brightspeed passed 3 million fiber-enabled locations in April 2026 and says it will reach 4 million by year-end, so which of the two you get depends on whether the build has reached your street.

What are the Brightspeed internet plans and prices?

Brightspeed internet comes in six fiber tiers and one copper tier. Every fiber tier is symmetrical, ships with a Wi-Fi 7 router, and carries no contract. The advertised price assumes AutoPay and paperless billing and holds for 12 months; after that the plan moves to its regular rate, which across the three comparison sites we checked runs about $10 higher. The table shows the promo price, the regular rate, and the prepaid card Brightspeed attaches to each tier on its own plan page.

The pattern to notice is the $10 steps. Every fiber tier is $10 more than the one below it, every tier goes up $10 after 12 months, and dropping AutoPay costs $10. That makes the effective long-run price of 1 Gig $59.99 (or $69.99 without AutoPay), which is still below what most cable companies charge for a gig with a fraction of the upload speed. The 200 Mbps tier at $29.99 is one of the cheapest fiber plans in the country, and because it is symmetrical it out-uploads every cable plan at any price.

What happens when you check a real Brightspeed address?

We ran a Kannapolis, North Carolina street address (919 S Juniper St, 28081 — inside one of Brightspeed’s largest fiber builds) through the brightspeed.com availability checker on September 7, 2026. The result was not a rate card. It was a pop-up reading “Great news. Brightspeed may be available at your address. Call us to learn more about the best promotions for you,” with a phone number and no prices. The plan page behind it still showed the four fiber tiers (2 Gig, 1 Gig, 500 Mbps, 200 Mbps), the prepaid-card badges ($250, $150, $100) and the Wi-Fi 7 router line, plus the legacy “Brightspeed Internet” DSL card at up to 20 Mbps.

That is the Brightspeed internet buying experience at many addresses right now: the speeds, cards and no-contract terms are public, but the monthly price is released only by phone or once you are inside the online order flow. It is why the third-party figures in the table above disagree on a few tiers, and why you should get the quote in writing before ordering. Ask the agent for the promo price, the regular rate it becomes after 12 months, and whether the price shown assumes AutoPay and paperless billing.

Is Brightspeed fiber or DSL at your address?

This is the only question that matters with Brightspeed internet. The company was created in October 2022 when Apollo Global Management bought Lumen’s incumbent telephone business across 20 states — roughly 6.5 million addresses, almost all served by CenturyLink copper. Brightspeed’s entire strategy is to overbuild that copper with XGS-PON fiber, and the pace is fast: 1 million fiber-enabled locations by April 2024, 1.82 million by January 2025, 3 million by April 2026, with a stated goal of 4 million by the end of 2026 and more than 5 million when the build is done.

More than $860 million in local, state and federal broadband grants covers about 338,000 of those Brightspeed internet locations.

Until fiber reaches a given street, Brightspeed keeps selling the legacy service under the plain “Brightspeed Internet” name: DSL over the phone line at up to 20 Mbps in most exchanges (up to 40 Mbps in some), enough for two devices, browsing and email. Brightspeed itself describes it as suited to “up to 2 devices at once.”

It costs about as much as the fiber 1 Gig promo, requires monthly prepayment, and adds a router rental. What fees and fine print come with Brightspeed internet?

The Brightspeed internet fiber plans are fairly clean. The Wi-Fi 7 router is included, data is unlimited, and there is no annual contract or early-termination fee. The advertised price requires AutoPay and paperless billing; without them the bill is $10 higher. Professional installation is listed at $99–$100 and is often waived in promotions, and self-install is available at addresses that already have a fiber drop. The prepaid reward cards ($100, $150 or $250 depending on tier) arrive only after you keep a qualifying plan for 90 days, and they are issued as Pathward Visa cards with their own expiration terms.

The DSL plan is where the fine print bites. It requires monthly prepayment, the modem or router rents for $15 a month or sells for $200, and speeds are “up to” figures on a copper line whose real throughput falls with distance from the node. Taxes and fees are extra on every plan. Brightspeed’s own terms note that speeds are based on a wired connection and compatible equipment; Wi-Fi speeds will be lower.

Brightspeed internet vs cable and 5G at a fiber address

The Brightspeed internet footprint is mostly small cities and rural exchanges, so the usual competition is Spectrum, Xfinity, Cox or a regional cable company on one side and the three 5G fixed-wireless carriers on the other. Here is how the Brightspeed internet fiber ladder compares on price, speed and upload.

At $29.99 for symmetrical 200 Mbps, Brightspeed Fiber 200 is cheaper than every fixed-wireless plan without a phone bundle and uploads ten times faster than any of them. At $49.99 for a gig it matches Verizon 5G Home’s standalone price with roughly ten times the download and fifty times the upload. The two things the carriers have that Brightspeed does not are longer price locks (Verizon 3–5 years, T-Mobile 5 years, versus Brightspeed’s 12 months) and tax-inclusive pricing. If you plan to stay put for years and hate rate creep, that 12-month hold is the real cost of Brightspeed’s low entry price.

Is Brightspeed internet any good?

On the fiber side, Brightspeed internet is a strong product and the reviews are mixed for reasons that have little to do with the fiber. CableTV.com’s January 2026 review rated Brightspeed 2.9 out of 5 overall, with customer-satisfaction scores in the low 50s on speed, reliability and service — numbers dragged down by the millions of customers still on inherited copper and by installation and phone-support complaints during the build. Households that get the fiber product get symmetrical gig speeds, a Wi-Fi 7 router and no contract for less than most cable promos, which is a good deal by any measure.

Our read: Brightspeed internet is worth ordering the day fiber reaches your address, and worth checking again every few months if it has not, because the build is adding a million locations a year. In the meantime, do not pay $50 for 20 Mbps DSL if a $35 fixed-wireless plan or any cable tier is available; the DSL product exists to keep a line active until the fiber arrives, not to compete.

Who owns Brightspeed, and what happened to CenturyLink?

Brightspeed internet is owned by funds managed by Apollo Global Management, which bought Lumen Technologies’ incumbent local exchange business in 20 states for about $7.5 billion in a deal that closed on October 3, 2022, and later brought in Mubadala Investment Company as a co-investor. The company is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and led by CEO Michel Combes.

Customers in those 20 states who had CenturyLink internet or phone service became Brightspeed customers automatically; CenturyLink continues to operate in the states Lumen kept, and AT&T acquired Lumen’s Quantum Fiber business in the remaining metros in February 2026. Brightspeed has committed more than $2 billion of its own capital to the fiber build on top of the public grants.
