Discount Power Review 2026: Plans, Rates & Is It Good?

Discount Power is a Houston-based Texas electricity provider, owned by NRG Energy through US Retailers LLC, that sells fixed-rate, bill-credit and free-nights plans in the deregulated parts of Texas. On a live quote for ZIP 75078 (Oncor) on September 21, 2026, Discount Power listed 10 plans. The advertised bills at 1,000 kWh ran from $89 to $193 a month. The $89 and $99 bill-credit plans only reach that price if you use 1,000 kWh or more; for a typical Texas home over a full year, the plain Wise Buy 9 plan came out cheapest.

To see what Discount Power actually charges, we ran ZIP 75078 through its online shop on September 21, 2026, opened every plan’s details and read all 10 Electricity Facts Labels. Here is what the quote showed beyond the plan cards.

What the Discount Power Electricity Facts Labels say

Every plan at this ZIP is built from the same Oncor delivery charges plus one of three pricing tricks: a usage charge that disappears at 1,000 kWh, a bill credit that appears at a usage threshold, or a cheaper nighttime rate. The EFLs, dated September 1, 2026 (Wise Buy 12: August 1), break them out.

The $125 bill-credit cliff

Bill Credit Bundle 9 charges 14.97¢ per kWh for energy — more than double Wise Buy 9 — and gives back $125 in any month you reach 1,000 kWh. At exactly 1,000 kWh the bill is about $89. At 999 kWh the credit disappears and the same plan bills about $214. At 800 kWh it is about $172, or 21.5¢ per kWh.

That makes the $89 card price a best case, not an average. Texas homes swing from 700 kWh in spring and fall to 1,700 kWh or more in summer, so a bill-credit plan wins in some months and loses badly in others. Bill Credit Bundle 2000 kWh 18 works the same way at 2,000 kWh, a level most homes only hit in August.

The $9.95 usage charge below 1,000 kWh

The Wise Buy plans run the cliff in the other direction. They add a $9.95 usage charge in any month under 1,000 kWh and drop it at 1,000 kWh or more — so a 999-kWh month on Wise Buy 9 costs about $141, and a 1,000-kWh month costs about $132. The penalty is small and predictable, which is why Wise Buy 9 holds up best over a full year.

What a real Texas year costs on each plan

To compare plans the way a household actually pays, we applied each EFL to the same 12-month usage profile for an Oncor home: 13,600 kWh a year, from 750 kWh in April to 1,750 kWh in August, averaging about 1,133 kWh a month. The bill-credit plans earn their credit in only 6 of the 12 months.

The plan with the lowest card price, Bill Credit Bundle 9, cost $312 more over the year than Wise Buy 9. If your home reliably uses 1,000 to 1,900 kWh every single month — a large house with electric heat, for example — the bill-credit plans can come out ahead. For most households, the flat-priced Wise Buy 9 is the safer choice.

How Discount Power prices vary by Texas utility

Texas has no single electricity price. What you pay depends on your transmission and distribution utility — the wires company that physically delivers power to your meter — and on how much you use. In our August 30, 2026 check of Power to Choose, here is how Discount Power’s cheapest plan priced in each of the five Texas utility territories at the 1,000 kWh benchmark.

That 1.9¢ spread is not a discount or a promotion. It is the delivery charge built into the advertised rate, and it is the single biggest reason two neighbors in different parts of the state quote wildly different numbers for the same plan name.

The usage tier changes the price again

Every Texas rate is quoted at a usage level, and the number moves when your usage does. On Oncor, Wise Buy 9 — the successor to the Saver 10 we priced in August, with the same 6.7174¢ energy charge — prices out like this on its September 2026 EFL:

Only half of that rate is the electricity

The Electricity Facts Label for Wise Buy 9 breaks the 13.2¢ apart. The energy charge — the part the provider actually sells you — is 6.7174¢ per kWh, plus a $9.95 usage charge in months under 1,000 kWh. Everything else is Oncor’s delivery charge of $4.06 a month and 6.0295¢ per kWh, passed through, as the label puts it, “as billed from TDSP without mark-up.”

That matters when you shop. Roughly half of a Texas electricity bill is a regulated delivery cost that no retail provider can discount, which is why switching providers moves your bill by less than the headline rates suggest — and why the same plan costs 1.9¢ more in one territory than another.

How Discount Power compares to the rest of the board

On the Oncor grid there were 149 residential plans available on August 30, 2026. This provider sits in the middle of that field, not at the value end:

At those August 30 prices, a household using 1,000 kWh a month on Saver 10 (now Wise Buy 9 on Discount Power’s own site) paid about $26 a month more than the same household on Frontier Utilities’ Power Saver 9. Over a ten-month term that is roughly $260. Whether that gap is worth it comes down to service, and the state publishes a record for that too.

The complaint record nobody quotes

The PUCT keeps a rolling six-month complaint history for every retail provider, broken out by category. The record is kept at the legal entity level, so those numbers are shared with Cirro Energy, Pennywise Power and Compassion Energy — all of them US Retailers LLC.

Read these carefully. They are raw counts, not rates. The PUCT does not publish customer numbers alongside them, so a provider with ten times the customers will tend to show more complaints without being ten times worse. What the table is useful for is the mix: billing disputes dominate the US Retailers record, and ten slamming complaints — customers switched without proper authorization — is a category worth knowing about before you sign.

Who actually owns Discount Power

Discount Power is not a standalone company. PUCT filings list the certificated entity as US Retailers LLC, which also does business as Cirro Energy, Pennywise Power and Compassion Energy. That is why Cirro and Discount Power quote within a tenth of a cent of each other on every Texas grid — 13.2¢ and 13.3¢ on Oncor, 12.0¢ and 12.1¢ on CenterPoint. They are one company’s two shelves. US Retailers LLC (PUCT certificate #10177, 910 Louisiana St., Houston) is part of NRG Energy, which also owns Reliant, Direct Energy and Green Mountain Energy.

This pattern runs through the whole Texas market. Amigo Energy and Tara Energy are both Fulcrum Retail Energy. Rhythm and Energy Texas are both Rhythm Ops. Reliant trades as NRG Home. If you are “shopping around” between two brands owned by the same entity, you are not shopping around.

What to check before you sign

• Your TDU, not your city. Discount Power’s prices move up to 1.9¢ across utility territories, and some metros straddle two.
• Your real usage. Pull twelve months off your current bill. If any month dips under 1,000 kWh, a $125 bill-credit plan can cost far more than its card price.
• The usage charge. Wise Buy plans add $9.95 in months under 1,000 kWh. Small apartments feel that most.
• The early termination fee. $95 on 9-month plans, up to $395 on Wise Buy 36. Shorter terms are the cheaper exit, and the fee is waived if you move.
• The 90-day guarantee. If a plan isn’t working, the company lets you switch to another of its plans within 90 days without a cancellation fee.
• The end date. When a fixed term expires, Texas plans typically roll to a variable rate — Wise Buy Monthly priced at 17.2¢ at 1,000 kWh. Put a reminder in your calendar.

So is Discount Power worth it?

At ZIP 75078, Wise Buy 9 at 13.2¢ with a $95 cancellation fee is Discount Power’s strongest plan for most homes, and it held up best across a full year of real usage. The $89 and $99 bill-credit plans are only a deal if your usage never drops below 1,000 kWh. On Oncor, Discount Power was priced 2–3¢ above the cheapest credible plans on the August 30 board, and its parent entity carries a heavier billing-complaint record than the providers undercutting it. That is a real trade-off, not a verdict — but it should be a deliberate one.

Discount Power for business: small business offers by phone

Discount Power, an NRG retail brand, publishes a Texas small-business offers page that says only that it has “some of the lowest prices around” and directs business owners to call 1-877-455-4674. As of September 28, 2026 no business plan names, terms, energy charges or eligibility rules are published and there is no online quote path. Because Discount Power shares a parent with NRG Business, NRG’s published Texas small-commercial terms are the closest public reference for how a Discount Power business contract is likely structured — a per-meter base charge, TDSP delivery passed through without markup, and an early-termination fee of $250 per remaining month capped at 12 — and any quote should be held against Champion’s public 9.7¢ energy charge on Oncor.
